Wine classes with Marco Lami

Enoteca Marilu co-founder, sommelier Marco Lami, takes you on a journey of Italy through its wines. From north to south, covering both whites and reds, you’ll learn not only about the characteristics of Italian regional wines but you’ll also get to explore some unusual and rare Italian grape varieties (one of Marco’s passions) — have you tried Rossese, Petit Arvine or Timorasso grapes before?

You’ll also learn about how climate affects the wine, the world of low intervention (“natural”) wine, how it differs from conventional wine (and why we drink it), how to taste defects and faults and what they mean, the difference between organic and biodynamic, the concept of terroir (what it really means) and so much more. You’ll get to taste many excellent wines and have a grazing lunch along the way of bites paired with the wines, plus there are notes to take home with you too.

The tone of the class is fun, informative and delicious and is designed for everyone to enjoy. You can enjoy this class whether you come from no knowledge of wine or you’re in the industry! You can even enjoy this class if you don’t drink wine (we have spit buckets).

Some fun facts about Italian wines:

  • Italy is divided into 20 regions, but Italian wine is then divided into many further sub-regions (Tuscany alone has 10 sub-regions for wine).

  • It is estimated that there are 2000 indigenous grape varieties scattered over the Italian peninsula.

  • Italy is considered mainly a red wine producer (Sangiovese is the most widely planted grape variety in the country, and Tuscany is where it finds its best expression) but there are many pockets of excellent white wines, which you’ll taste!

We run this class for private groups and occasional set dates. Email us at vino@enotecamarilu.com if you would like to know more or book this class.
